A story of agreement, no mystery

Today, when an orchestra tunes, it takes a la at 440 Hz as a reference. This value became an international standard (ISO 16) in 1955, confirmed in 1975: it's a convention, not a physical truth. Before this date, tuning pitches varied considerably depending on the times, regions, and instruments. In 17th-century France, the la could be around 392 Hz; in 19th-century Vienna, it rose higher, between 435 and 445 Hz.   1. Find the same piece performed by the same ensemble at 432 Hz and 440 Hz (some labels explicitly offer this). Ideally a recent recording, well recorded, comparable.
  2. Listen to each under the same conditions: same headphones, same volume, same time of day. No video on the side, no comment read beforehand.
  3. Honestly note what you feel - without trying to find what someone promised you. Maybe one of the two versions speaks to you more. Maybe the difference is small. Both answers are valid.
  4. Beware of "ambient 432 Hz" recordings that superimpose synthetic layers and grandiose statements: it's no longer an experiment, it's marketing.

A possible listening ritual

Lacking a universal truth, there is a simple practice. Choose a piece you like, whatever its tuning frequency. Sit down. Close your eyes. Breathe a bit longer on the exhale than on the inhale. Listen to the first five minutes without doing anything else. No phone, no screen, no parallel task.

What soothes, in music, is almost never the exact frequency of the la - it's the quality of attention you give it.
